Senior Spotlight: Pamela Ascobereta

While the start to Pamela Ascobereta’s senior season on the Varsity Girls Golf team hasn’t started the way she might have planned, that hasn’t stopped her from continuing to practice, improve, and compete. Ascobereta recently competed in the Deering Bay Junior Club Championship and came away with a first-place finish after shooting an incredible round score of 73. Varsity Girls Golf Head Coach Traci Holstein praises Ascobereta’s mindset while on the course. “Pam plays golf hole-by-hole, always looking forward. She doesn’t dwell on the last hole because it’s already over”. Holstein notes that mindset has paid off, “she’ll say, ‘it’s fine I’ll par the next one’ and then she does”.

Ascobereta, who started golfing at the age of four, credits golf for helping to improve her patience and self-control. Despite taking a few years off from the game at the age of ten, she returned to golfing to play as the only girl on Palmer Trinity’s Varsity Golf team as a freshman. Now, entering her senior year, she is the senior leader on the Girls Varsity team where she takes to heart her opportunity to serve as a role model to the many underclassmen on the team. “She does the perfect job of being the big sister and a good friend,” Holstein states, recalling her ability to join in on the silliness and then quickly switch to being the confident leader and motivator that she is.

Golf has afforded Ascobereta a chance to travel and play courses not only around the state of Florida, but internationally as well. While she commonly competes at Doral, Deering Bay, the Biltmore, and Riviera Country Club, she has also traveled to Tampa to compete in the FHSAA state tournament and enjoys returning to her favorite course, Club de Golf Mexico in Mexico City, where she first learned to golf at a young age.
Outside of Palmer Trinity and off the driving range or greens, Ascobereta enjoys spending time with her family and reading. Quarantining has allowed Ascobereta to not only put her focus towards improving her golf game and filling out important college applications, but to also give back to the community that she loves. Along with her mother, Ascobereta has taken up sewing in order to make masks to send over to Mexico to help keep communities safe in the wake of COVID-19.

Ascoberta, who credits her favorite movie as Back to the Future, enjoys eating fried rice and sushi, lists Morat as her favorite band and can speak three languages, is excited to look to the future, where she has plans to study International Relations on a pre-law track to eventually become a family attorney. While she has yet to submit her college applications, she seeks a school in an urban environment to best set her up to achieve her goals.
Palmer Trinity Athletics wishes Pam the best of luck as she enters the college application process and cannot wait to see her back on the course soon!
