Senior Spotlight: Kyndal Royal

If you’ve attended a Palmer Trinity football game over the past five years, you are sure to have heard the name Kyndal Royal. The hard-hitting and defensively sound defensive back has been patrolling the Falcons’ secondary on the Varsity Football team since he was an eighth grader back in 2016. In the past five years, Royal’s game has evolved physically, as he has grown faster and stronger, mentally as his decision making has improved, and as a leader. Royal, who was named an All-Dade Honorable mention once and selected to the All-Dade Third Team twice in the past three seasons, has always focused on the older players as he learned what it took to be a leader. This year, he’ll be a senior captain and notes that in order to be an effective leader, he has to prove it on the field and let his actions speak louder than words. Head Coach Mark Reese believes Royal has already shown his ability as a leader. On top of describing Royal as a trusted and talented member of the defense for multiple years, he named him “the best leader of all at leading by example”.
Royal has been playing football since the age of four. Even at a young age, he was driven to play after hearing stories about the success his father, who is now an assistant coach on the Varsity Football team, had on the football field. However, Royal’s family ties to the game do not end with his father. Kyndal’s brother, Kyon, was a 2019 graduate of Palmer Trinity and also a star football player as a linebacker. “Playing on the same defense was great, the chemistry was so on point, it felt like no one could stop us,” the younger Royal recalls of playing with his older brother. That 2018 team, Kyndal’s sophomore season and his last year playing with his brother, was extra special for the brothers as the Falcons won their first State Playoff game and won the Florida Independent Football Conference. That season also provided Kyndal’s favorite memory as a Falcon – winning the Battle of the Oar against Ransom Everglades for the first time in over ten years. “Nothing felt better than breaking a losing streak against your rival on your home field,” Royal states.

Coming into this season, Royal knows he has big shoes to fill as a leader and hopes to follow in the footsteps of his brother by becoming a vocal and dedicated player. Off the football field, Royal enjoys hanging out with his friends, working out, and playing Xbox. Royal is also heavily involved in the greater community, particularly through his efforts with Breakthrough Miami. He notes that his favorite movie is The Wolf of Wall Street and artist is Drake. Something many people do not know about Royal is that he actually loves to cook, naming steak as his favorite to make and eat.

Looking ahead, Royal looks forward to majoring in Economics and names Wake Forest as his favorite college. In the present, however, Royal remains focused and is excited to finally suit up for the Falcons for his senior year. The Falcons kick off the 2020 season at home against Palm Glades Academy on Friday, October 9th at 4:00 pm.
