Planting the Edible Garden at School

In Florida, fall is an excellent time to start a vegetable garden. The 6th-grade students planted cool-season vegetables including lettuce, kale, and radishes. Check the posts by Mr. Moore, Middle School Science Chair and Teacher, here. Members of the Eco Club and Mr. Llinas, Sponsor of the Eco Club, also planted a garden bed with tomatoes, peppers, and basil. Through the excitement of growing, teachers hope to make students question what constitutes a healthy diet and what is truly required to produce good, clean and fair food. The mission of the Edible Garden at Palmer Trinity School is to reconnect students with real food and to empower and inspire them to eat well. We accomplish this by engaging students in the edible garden so that they can experience first-hand what real food is, where it comes from and how to grow it.
