Students Visit FIU, Miccosukee Indian Village and Islamic School for Cultural Lessons

AP Human Geography students, through a day trip, had direct exposure to the topics learned in class:

They started at FIU College of Engineering to learn about the applications of GIS technology in hydrological models as well as in the disposal methods of nuclear waste. Students and professors explained how they tested out drones they designed and mapped out areas.

The second part of the trip was to visit the Miccosukee  Indian Village to better understand ethnic and folk cultures. Students observed the main components of folk culture and conducted short interviews with representatives of the tribe to learn about their cultural traits and belief system.

We concluded the day visiting the Masjid An-Noor Islamic School as an example of a universalizing religion. We observed the religious landscape and participated in a religious service.

Faculty member, Mrs. Laura Massa highly recommends taking students outside the classroom to see geography in action.
