What Honor Means To Me - Justin Ebanks '27

Justin Ebanks' speech at the 2022 Honor Chapel

Honor is the one word that I would use to describe Palmer Trinity. It’s being respectful, which we all promised to be when we signed the honor code. It means attachment, adherence, and commitment.

To honor ourselves is to make time to think about our actions and reflect upon them. To honor others is to stop and listen to what they have to say. And maybe it’s not even just to listen to what they say, but also what they don’t say, what they’re scared to say. Honor is the fulfillment of an obligation, like our obligation to keep promises and therefore, our obligation to act with honesty and integrity as stated in the honor code.

To have honor is to be held in high esteem. It’s to be respected and admired, but also to act in a way that will cause others to respect and admire you. That’s something that all of us want, but not something that all of us work to obtain. For us to bring honor to our parents, our teachers, and our school, we need to act in a way that will do so. We are representatives of all the things we want to bring honor to. If we wanted to honor our parents, we’d take advantage of all the opportunities we have here at this school. If we wanted to honor our teachers, we’d pay attention in class. If we wanted to honor our school, we would set an example for all the other students. So ask yourself: how will you honor those you care about?
