Summer 2022 at Breakthrough Miami

Breakthrough Miami had another amazing summer on Palmer Trinity's campus. The school was filled with activities, led by PTS students and alums. In this article, Isabella Moralejo '23 shares how BTM enhances the lives of scholars in the program, and photos from this year's activities.
Breakthrough Miami is a nonprofit organization founded in 1991, whose mission is to support students from under-resourced and underrepresented communities through middle and high school and give them access to opportunities. Typically, the average Breakthrough Miami scholar (or, student enrolled in the program) is from an underrepresented minority, a low-income family, have English as a second language, will be the first in their family to attend college, and/or lives in a single-parent household. These characteristics are found in many high school dropouts, which is why Breakthrough strives to turn these obstacles into motivation for success.

The average rate of graduation for students in Miami Dade Public Schools in 2019 was 86%, however, 100% of scholars involved with Breakthrough Miami graduated high school on time, with 96% of them enrolling in a college.

This year, Palmer Trinity School and Breakthrough Miami will celebrate their 10th year of partnership! Palmer Trinity School has hosted 120 scholars (5th-8th grade) every year, with over 50 PTS student-volunteers supporting them. The Palmer Trinity Breakthrough Miami Club is one of the most popular clubs on campus, for a reason. Creating activities, lessons, and interacting with the scholars makes Palmer Trinity Students continue to sign up for the Breakthrough Miami Club every year. Breakthrough relies on other high school students to mentor, teach, and support scholars through this program, which is why we need all the help we can get!
