PTS Shines at Youth Climate Summit

The Student Advisory Board on Climate Change hosted the 2020 Miami Youth Climate Summit on March 7 at Florida International University’s Graham Center.

The Student Advisory Board on Climate Change was comprised of 25 students from seven local schools, including Gulliver Schools, Robert Morgan Educational Center, TERRA Environmental Research Institute, Palmer Trinity School, Ransom Everglades, Palmetto Middle School, and Miami Palmetto High School.

The goal of the summit was to move from the "What is climate change?" to the "What can we do about climate change?" Participants discussed local solutions by looking at climate change through a global lens.

The summit featured Andres Ruzo, founder and director of The Boiling River Project; two workshop sessions; a student panel and a National Geographic Expert Panel. Palmer Trinity students Aidan Levy and Leandro De Armas hosted the “Climate Leadership” session.

“The motivated team of students representing local public and private schools put together inspiring talks and workshops” stated Dr. Leopoldo Llinas, Director of Environmental Stewardship at Palmer Trinity. Participating students learned new skills regarding climate change and educators attended a certification workshop to become National Geographic Certified Educators.

Palmer Trinity School believes schools have a special role and responsibility in confronting the challenges of climate change and environmental stewardship. The summit is an example of how the school is dedicated to addressing these issues both inside and outside the classroom.

Youth Climate Summits have been spreading across the country and around the world. The 2020 Miami Youth Climate Summit convened, engaged, connected and empowered young people around Miami-Dade for action on climate change.
