Time marches on...

The river this November afternoon
Rests in an equipoise of sun and cloud:
A glooming light, a gleaming darkness shroud
Its passage. All seems tranquil, all in tune.
― Cecil Day-Lewis, The Complete Poems of C. Day-Lewis

Believe it or not, November has arrived, Thanksgiving Break is fast approaching, and semester examinations are only five weeks away. The "holiday press" has begun, and I even heard my first Christmas tune the other day and spotted a couple of television ads over the weekend. The days are a blur right now, with all of the normal activities any given week brings. In order to keep up with life's often frenetic pace, I constantly monitor my personal calendar, checking off items from my "To Do" list, while trying to keep track of the various events. Crossing off these "To Do" items brings a certain sense of accomplishment, although it is fleeting, for the list seems to grow exponentially, and a few of those items seem to remain permanently. As life's moments seem to become part of one big blur, too often I find myself at the end of the day, asking "Where did the time go?" Those days become weeks, weeks become months, and, months become years. Often, to my astonishment, if I stop, and take a glance around me, something, or someone, has changed...Things are different. The grey-haired gentleman peering back from the mirror is not my father, but me; that freckle-faced, once chubby little girl is now as tall as two of her brothers; that gangly, smiling 6th grader who just walked by me on campus was only a little boy, seemingly yesterday, playing with his Legos, and building great skyscrapers.

Time marches on...
And, as noted novelist, Thomas Hardy so astutely observes,

Time changes everything except something within us which is always surprised by change.

Life here at Palmer Trinity is no different. Our Community is one that is constantly evolving. With 776 students growing up before our very eyes and experiencing those oh so wonderful teenage years, we are certainly witnessing real transformations happening---often, in dramatic fashion. In our professional roles, we are all busy, on and off-campus, in a multitude of ways. We are serving as Teachers, Advisors, Coaches, Club Leaders, Mentors, Department Heads, Lead Advisors, Deans, Directors, Coordinators...And the list goes on! We are also, and maybe most importantly, trusted colleagues for one another. And with the recent tragedy of ZeAndre Zachary's sudden passing, I find myself feeling so very grateful to live, work, and play in such a Community. Without dwelling too much here, please know how appreciative I am to be part of this School, especially as we grieve together. Friday morning's All Souls' Day Chapel felt particularly meaningful and powerful on Friday to me, and for a variety of reasons. Beyond the beautiful music, solemn prayers and Community fellowship, I found myself especially grateful for the opportunity simply to pause, reflect, and gather my feelings and thoughts in such a loving environment. Friday's gathering also furthered that constant, and simple message: life really is all about change. Embracing change, recognizing the impermanence of our state, and rejoicing in our daily existence is so very important.

Time marches on...

As I changed the clocks early this morning, and write this Missive to you today, I have my calendar turned to the busy week ahead. Noting tomorrow's plan for the day, I see that I will be touring the site of our rapidly progressing Trinity Chapel. Watching the amazing development of that construction project has been immensely rewarding, for you may recall, it was only a year ago (November 6, 2018) that our School broke ground officially for Trinity Chapel. So much in my own life---and in the life of Palmer Trinity--- has happened since that ceremony, and it is really quite something to see that beautiful, sacred place literally rise from the ground. One day soon, we will gather as a Community in Trinity Chapel, and I sincerely cannot wait for that day to arrive. And, so, as life swirls about us, our daily routines become disrupted, and those unexpected moments occur, perhaps you may find assurance in this simple Celtic Blessing I shared at that Trinity Chapel Groundbreaking Service nearly a year ago:

A Celtic Blessing
If there is righteousness in the heart,
there will be beauty in the character.

If there is beauty in the character,
there will be harmony in the home.

If there is harmony in the home,
there will be order in the nation.

If there is order in the nation,
there will be peace in the world.

So let it be.

Amen

Patrick
