Senior Spotlight: Alejandro Cortinas

Palmer Trinity’s starting Left Tackle, Alejandro Cortinas, has received numerous honors in the past year in regards to his performance on the football field. He was named to the 2018 All-Dade Third Team for his position on the offensive line, as well as the Florida Independent Football Conference (FIFC) Third Team. In addition, he received the Palmer Trinity Offensive Line Award as chosen by the Falcons’ coaching staff. This year, he serves as a senior captain and leader amongst a young Palmer Trinity squad.

With numerous players at key positions having graduated following the 2018-2019 school year, Alejandro finds himself as one of only four seniors on this year’s team. When faced with helping to lead a young team to a fourth straight FIFC championship, Cortinas likes to remain calm. “I try not to focus on the fact that we lost that many guys, and instead I try to just focus on working with what we have,” Cortinas mentioned. He hopes to teach the younger players not only the realities of the game of football, but hopefully some life lessons along the way. Cortinas’s head coach, Mark Reese, praises his outstanding work ethic and ability to lead by example.

Despite all of these accolades athletically, Cortinas finds solace and happiness in another hobby: music. “I think music is the greatest thing on the planet,” he mentions, stating he likes music “because of how it can move people and how a song can mean something completely different to someone else”. Cortinas can play guitar and bass guitar in addition to his vocal ability. He was selected to sing as a part of the High School Honors Choir at Carnegie Hall in 2017, 2018, and 2019, as well as at the Sydney Opera House in 2018.

Music could play another huge role in his life as he continues through his college application and recruitment process. He is currently being pursued to continue his football career at collegiate level by Macalester College, Oberlin College, and Washington and Lee University. Currently, he is choosing between a major in Journalism or Music. A strong music school could very well impact the college of his choosing. Cortinas mentions that he also is considering the community, diversity, spirit, and facilities of each campus as he weighs his options.

Outside of Palmer Trinity, Cortinas likes to travel in order to hike and snowboard, and once spent a month backpacking the mountains throughout New Mexico. You can find him eating wings, his favorite food, or listening to his favorite band, Oasis.

Be sure to come out and support Alejandro and the Palmer Trinity football team as they work to build off a historic season last year. The Falcons, after a comeback win and a 1-0 start, have their season opener on Friday, August 30th at 4:00 pm against Somerset Academy Key.
