Life in the Middle (of nowhere)

Sitting on the porch, watching traffic on Route 20 go by, is a perfect location to relax, read, reflect and refresh.

In the one stop light town of Richfield Springs, it's almost a step back into time. There are antique stores, historic buildings, a central school that was built in 1889 and a house built in 1883 that I call a summer home. It's not my home, but for the month of July, I call it home.

Back when the house was built, the town of Richfield Springs was a bustling resort area for people wanting to bathe in the Sulphur springs. Now, the springs are still there, but they don't attract the "city folks" anymore. The construction of the New York State Thruway has caused Route 20 to become a scenic, yet more desolate road similar to that of Radiator Springs from the movie "Cars." Located twenty minutes from Cooperstown, NY, which is home to the Baseball Hall of Fame, there are things to do if one went looking and was willing to partake in a scenic drive past farms, fields, hills and lakes.

The inside of the house is like a museum filled with furniture and decorations of the time period so I'm almost afraid to have my kids sit on some of the furniture. But when I think back to what it was like to live in Richfield Springs when the house was built, my mind begins to think:

  • The house was built in 1883, less than 20 years after the Civil War ended. The country was going through the period of reconstruction and Chester A. Arthur was President of the 38 United States.
  • The Brooklyn Bridge just opened.
  • It would be at least another 13 years before Miami would be incorporated as a city.
  • Electricity was relatively new and not fully established in homes across the country.
  • The Wright Brothers hadn’t even thought of flying.
  • The car wasn’t yet invented.
Whatever you do or wherever you go, be sure to find the time to do at least two out of the four activities – relax, read, reflect and refresh. PTS Life in the Middle can be very fast at times. Whether it’s sporting events, performances, school work or the social pressures that drive our students, it’s important to find time to decompress. Hopefully for you, before school begins, you will have had that opportunity. It might not be Richfield Springs, but if you can find that special somewhere quiet to relax, read, reflect or refresh, you will come back to school with more enthusiasm and readiness. Best of luck with the last few days of summer… we will be back in to #PTSLIFEINTHEMIDDLE very soon.
