Expanding Learning Beyond The Classroom

Students in AP Human Geography deepened their learning with a fieldwork trip that exposed them to relevant concepts covered in this course. We started the day visiting FIU School of Engineering, where a team of environmental scientists showed us the application of GIS (Geographic Information System) to map water contamination and nuclear hazards left behind by nuclear testing sites from the Cold War era. Then we visited the Miccosukee Indian Village to see first-hand how folk culture is preserved against the forces of globalization. We ended the day attending a religious service at Masjid An-Noor Islamic School and applying participant observation in techniques and informal interviews.
