Shark Tagging Trip

On March 20, 2015 – the last day before Spring Break – 16 PTS students and three chaperones were privileged to take part of PTS’ second shark tagging trip with the University of Miami after about a three-year hiatus. We all met early at PTS and left the school for Crandon Marina, Key Biscayne. Once at the marina, we got on a large diving boat, where the RJ Dunlap (RJD) research team of the University of Miami provided an introduction about the research performed on the sharks, the safety of students and sharks, as well as about shark conservation. Once the boat arrived at the tagging location (right off Miami Beach’s South Beach), PTS students helped deploy 10 drum lines (i.e., specific fishing gear that allows sharks to swim in a large radius once caught), and took water measures, such as pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature.

World Water Week

As a part of her Global Studies class, PTS Senior Allegra Hill organized World Water Week to raise awareness both about the situation of women internationally who must carry water daily and the true value of that water. In addition to educational posters around campus, a video about world water usage was played during lunch periods. Students and teachers also volunteered to carry around 5-gallon water jugs each day to simulate the difficulty of living in a community without running water.
