College awareness and preparation begins in the Middle School at Palmer Trinity School. The College Counseling Program works closely with students and families in finding a college or university that will enrich the life of the student and build upon the strong foundation already established at Palmer Trinity School.
Workshops, guest speakers, panel discussions, information sessions and individual counseling serve to advise families about the choices students will be asked to make in high school that will directly affect their college options. At a very early stage, Palmer Trinity School addresses the various aspects of academic preparation and college awareness; including the importance of academic achievement and course selection, the necessity of participation in extracurricular activities and summer programs, the role of standardized testing, and financial aid and scholarship opportunities.
As an introduction to the College Selection Process, the Office of College Counseling hosts an evening program in the fall of the 11th grade year for parents. At this time, we invite guest speakers and college and high school admission counselors to advise students and their families how to best prepare for the college selection process. Our follow-up to this program is individualized meetings with students and their parents in the spring of their junior year.
The Office of College Counseling Provides Resources
Group workshops and individual advising are offered to all high school students in order to prepare them for the college search and campus visits. This counseling begins in the junior year and continues throughout the senior year for both students and their families. However, all parents and students are welcome to meet with PTS college counselors before the junior year if they have any questions or concerns. Evening programs offer a variety of topics and feature college admission representatives from universities across the nation. These programs help to educate families about the most current trends in college admissions, as well as build relationships between PTS and colleges and universities.
To help introduce students to a variety of institutions, over 150 college and university representatives visit Palmer Trinity School to meet with seniors and juniors during the fall. In addition, annual college tours in the spring are sponsored for sophomores and juniors to visit colleges in targeted geographic areas of the country. Moreover, PTS co-sponsors the Miami-Invitational College Fair with eight other private schools in the greater Miami area. Over 200 colleges and universities attend this event in late-October.
The Office of College Counseling Cultivates Relationships
Annually, members of the counseling team visit scores of colleges and universities to learn firsthand about academic programs and campus life. While on various campuses, counselors underscore the unique qualities of the Palmer Trinity community and serve as advocates for individual students.
